Khan Academy Kids Demo

A quick tutorial on setting up and using Khan Academy Kids in your classes.

Khan Academy Kids is a great application for reviewing, supporting, and extending learning. With the app you can target specific subject areas for students like reading, writing, numeracy, and literacy. It also promotes social emotional learning with story themes targeting ideas such as empathy, being a good friend, and taking turns. There are interesting stories presenting real-life, nonfictional information on a variety of topics from science and social studies. I know you’ll love it’s ability to differentiate by setting up students’ profiles where they are either at-grade level, below grade level, or above grade level. What you’ll also love is that it’s aligned to standards. You may use this tool for Tech Center Time with students in your afternoon instructional block to reinforce or extend learning as needed. The Khan Academy Kids app may be downloaded from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store (click here).  This is a mobile only app so you’ll need a mobile phone or tablet to use.

This training tutorial will walk you through step-by-step from account set up to creating your class roster of students and assigning tasks. I’ll also show you how to use the app to even differentiate tasks at different levels. These tutorials are organized into parts so that each video is pretty short so it’s a quick watch. The second video will show you how to check student work and send reports to parents. I’ve also included written notes to help you in case you forget steps, but don’t want to rewatch the video. My goal with these training videos is to get you feeling comfortable and capable in using the app. Even if you have no experience at all or if tech gives you anxiety and you often times feel lost carrying out tech tasks, this video is perfect for you. The specific learning targets are provided in the following section.
